The big picture

When this page was first posted, it sounded a warning that the plans for developing Providence Park might be out of tune with the wishes of the citizens of Milton. To assess that fear, we asked you to take a survey. Now that survey is complete, most of the original content of this page is obsolete. The opinions of Milton citizens is clear and overwhelming. You can see this for yourself by selecting “Survey Results” from the main menu at the top of this page. However, if you never took the survey, you might want to do so now before you see the opinion of your neighbors. Just click here Survey: 50 shades of green then return to this site to compare your position with the results on the Survey Results page.

Providence Park

Here is a thumbnail sketch of the park today:

  • 45 acres of densely forested, hilly countryside on a lake off Providence Road
  • It has around two miles of informal trails around streams, wetlands, lakeside and even a quarry with cliffs
  • Used by many individuals and families for walking/hiking, which varies from easy strolling to steep climbs
  • Home to rich wildlife including deer, snapping turtles, great blue herons, egrets and a lake teeming with painted turtles and fish.

In summary, it is as if a piece of North Georgia wilderness has been brought into our community so we can enjoy it every day – instead of having to drive an hour north.

Milton City’s plan for the park

Milton Council adopted a Master Plan for the park in June. Although this plan backed off features like a zip-line course and rock-climbing wall, it still contains the following:

  • Replace a trail with three-quarters-of-a-mile of 8-foot-wide concrete path
  • A playground
  • A large nature center
  • Large area of manicured lawns
  • Beautifying (?) the wetlands area
  • Building an elevated boardwalk over the wetlands and a wooden pier over the lake

At a total cost of $7 million.

PPP’s commentary on Milton’s plan

Before the survey, this section contained some opinions of those who started PPP. Now that the survey is complete and the results are so clear cut, any commentary from PPP is irrelevant. You can get the opinions of Milton citizens directly from the them on the Survey Results page. Plus, if you want some commentary, you can peruse the passionate comments of Miltonians on the Survey Comments page.
